What are word families? Word families are words that have a common pattern. These group of letters have the same sound (in this example ‘AD’)
- Sad
- Mad
- Had
- Fad
- Vad
- Pad
Why is it a good activity? It is a great activity for children to isolate and blend sounds together to read a real or nonsense word (nonsense words are OK! It still gives children the practice to isolate and blend sounds together while having great conversation at the same time).
Word Families will strengthen letter-sound correspondence and will allow young children to recognize word patterns when they are learning to read.
